Keep character names and forms of address consistent in long novels
Use the Book Bible and source comparison in 2novel to manage names, terminology and editorial decisions.

Changing names can interrupt a reader’s understanding
A character may have a name, title and nickname, while forms of address change with relationships and circumstances. If each chapter chooses a different translation, readers must guess whether two names refer to the same person. Editors need a place to record agreed choices and revisit them as the story reveals more context.
Put names in the context of the book
The Book Bible in 2novel brings together characters, terminology and context for review. Its value comes from checked decisions: which translated name to keep, which titles to distinguish and which relationships affect dialogue. These choices help guide work on subsequent chapters.
Agree on treatment before continuing
For example, the source may use a full name in narration and a nickname among friends. You can keep both while recording that they refer to one character. A title such as “senior martial brother” may be retained or adapted to the target language, but that choice should fit the story’s world rather than change because one isolated sentence sounds smoother.
Use a repeatable review loop
Start with a passage containing dialogue and names, then use later chapters to check whether your choices still fit.
- Read the source to identify main names, aliases and relationships.
- Open the Book Bible, check proposals and approve the treatment you want to use.
- Compare the translation with the source, correct inconsistent names or forms of address and save the edits.
- When new context appears, revisit affected chapters before exporting the translation.
Keep useful edits for later work
Editorial memory and style samples provide additional support when your workspace has access. Their purposes differ from a naming glossary: one carries context from edits, while the other shows a chosen writing style. Check what is applied to the book rather than treating every edit as a universal rule.
Try a chapter with several speakers
Open a book in 2novel and choose a dialogue-heavy chapter to review names first. The Book Bible guide under Read next explains how to inspect and approve context. A small review loop helps establish the decisions to carry into the rest of the novel.
